Huddersfield "Hidden Hero"
honoured with national award

He may not be as famous as Stella McCartney or Alexander McQueen, but his talent is up there with the industry's best - that was the verdict on Geoff Haigh, who received a top industry award today as one of the fashion and textile sector's hidden heroes.

Geoff, who has recently retired from the Huddersfield company TMS Software Ltd, is one of only 50 people across the whole of the UK to receive a "Behind the Seams" award from Skillfast-UK, the Sector Skills Council for fashion and textiles. Geoff has developed modern and up-to-date software used by over 30 textile companies to manage their businesses. He created the system in 1985 and it is now considered the backbone of the British textile manufacturing industry, helping companies in the UK and overseas to track their orders and control their stock.

Linda Florance of Skillfast-UK, who sponsor the awards, explains, "Famous fashionistas are always in the headlines, but even they would acknowledge that the fashion and textiles industry couldn't function without the creative and technical teams who work out of the public eye. We launched the Behind the Seams Awards to honour those whose skills normally go unrecognised. Without their abilities, UK businesses would not be up there, competing with the world's best."

Geoff was nominated for the award by the company's director, Steve Maguire. He praised Geoff's understanding of the textile industry, which has been vital to the success of the company. This knowledge comes from Geoff's experience of working at some of the world's finest worsted cloth manufacturers and becoming an accomplished designer at a young age.

Says Steve, "Geoff's energy and enthusiasm for the industry makes him more than worthy of receiving this award. It is a fitting tribute for someone who has dedicated his whole working life to textiles."

Receiving his award at Slaithwaite-based TMS Software Ltd, Geoff Haigh said, "I am delighted to receive a Behind The Seams award as the 50 years I have spent in the industry has shown me the importance of skills in the workplace. The UK textile industry has survived against all odds and it would be a great shame if it were to fail because of a lack of skilled people to working in the trade. To be named a 'skills hero' is a great end to my career in textiles."

Both Geoff and Steve will now be invited to an event in London in November, celebrating all the Behind the Seams award winners. Geoff''s name will also appear in a skills roll of honour which will be presented to Skills Minister Lord Young..

Says Linda Florance of Skillfast-UK, "As well as showcasing today's top talents, we will be telling MPs at the event, that more must be done to train the next generation of skills heroes. We need to make sure that skills like Geoff's do not die out."
